Civil Litigation - Case Management / Trial Setting
Northern California Civil Litigation Information
Most courts have procedures for shepherding cases through the
court system. Courts also have goals for concluding cases within twelve to
twenty-four months. While the case is pending, there may be one or more "Case
Management Conferences" which are basically checkpoints during the litigation
for the court and the parties to monitor the status of the case, and to help
make sure the case will get resolved in a timely fashion. Usually, within six
to nine months, there will be a "Trial Setting Conference" where the trial date
is scheduled. Once that date is scheduled, various deadlines are set in
accordance with the trial date, including deadlines for filing motions and
completing discovery.
